The Lake Montebello walking loop reopens after undergoing significant repairs. After two years of construction, Baltimore residents can once again enjoy this scenic trail. The Baltimore City Department of Public Works completed essential fixes to a massive sinkhole that had closed the loop since 2022.

Why Was the Lake Montebello Walking Loop Closed?

In November 2022, walkers noticed a basketball-sized hole near the trail. What appeared to be a small issue quickly escalated when engineers discovered collapsing infrastructure beneath it. The sinkhole revealed:

A 108-inch storm drain dating back to the early 1900s

An 84-inch pipe that supplies drinking water to Baltimore

Repairing the sinkhole required removing tons of soil—enough to fill 7,500 dump trucks. A temporary water main was also installed to ensure continued water service during construction.

What’s Next for Lake Montebello?

While the walking loop has reopened, this is just a temporary pause in the ongoing improvements to Lake Montebello. Starting fall 2025, crews will begin:

Dredging the lake to remove sediment built up over decades

Restoring the lake’s full water capacity

Enhancing filtration systems for cleaner drinking water

The $15 million project is set to take two years. Parts of the trail will close again to accommodate equipment storage, but most of the walking loop will remain open during the project.

Why the Lake Montebello Walking Loop Matters to You

Lake Montebello is not just a picturesque spot in Baltimore; it plays a vital role in the city’s water system. The lake helps provide clean water to over 300,000 homes in Baltimore City and County. The recent repairs ensure:

Reliable water service for residents

Compliance with state safety regulations

Protection against future infrastructure breakdowns

Additionally, the city replaced the old water main in early 2025. The new pipes are expected to last for another 100 years, ensuring continued service.

Plan Your Visit to the Lake Montebello Walking Loop

Now that the walking loop is reopened, it’s the perfect time to visit and enjoy the scenic views. The best times to avoid crowds are weekday mornings. Keep in mind:

Some areas still have temporary construction fencing

Dogs must remain on leashes

Cyclists should be mindful of walkers

The walking loop offers stunning views of Lake Montebello and the downtown skyline. It’s a great spot for exercise, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the outdoors.
